Express Train defending title in San Pasqual Stakes
By: John Caro, ThoroFan Handicapper
Hopefully, this will be a very nice day of racing at Santa Anita with three stakes on their card. This race is the last stakes and features a short field of six. Four of the six are last-out winners, including #2 Express Train, the defending champion from last year’s edition of the San Pasqual.
Three of the entries, #2 Express Train, #4 Eight Rings, and #1 Kiss Today Goodbye, ran in the San Antonio on December 26 at Santa Anita.
Express Train won by a nose beating Hot Rod Charlie, and Eight Rings finished third by a half. Unfortunately, Kiss Today Goodbye never got started and finished seventh.
The others, #3 American Theorem, #5 Spielberg, and #6 Law Professor, all won their last time out.
Law Professor won a GII stakes the same day the other three above ran. He flashes the highest speed of the field and shows versatility in his style, tracking a pace or closing to win.
Spielberg was a well-regarded two-year-old, and then things turned backward, pausing his career last March. He returned in mid-January to win an optional claiming race at a mile. He has the top trainer and jockey for the circuit.
American Theorem is a son of American Pharoah who has won two of seven races going shorter in lower-level company. He does get “Big Money” Mike aboard for this test.
Analysis
The way I see it, Express Train, Eight Rings, and Law Professor get the nod for this race. The odds will be short for the betting, so it may not be worth a large wager given the potential return.
