Handicapper's Corner: 2026 Royal Heroine (G3)

More questions than answers in Grade 3 Royal Heroine

By: Stuart Marc DeVoe, ThoroFan Handicapper

We have a potential bankroll builder for next week’s Derby festivities at Santa Anita on Saturday!

The Grade 3 Royal Heroine at a mile on the grass lines up 9 runners in a very competitive edition.  This race is named after the Hall of Fame mare who won the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1984.  She set a North American record for a mile on grass in doing so.  I don’t believe there are any Breeders’ Cup types in this affair, but it looks entertaining nonetheless.

Spotlighted as the closing race 9, post time for the $100,000 event is 5:09 PM PT (8:09 PM ET).

Let’s look at the field:

1.   Innovative (15/1)  It looked as though D’Amato was progressing this then 3yo fill through her conditions last year.  She went from a maiden winner in May to a G3 winner in September.  Something must have gone amiss in her last start back in October.  Phil is good off the layoff and if one can forgive the poor effort that was followed by time away, one can give this gal an outside look.  She will be a price.

2.  Tirupati (9/2)  Interestingly, Jonathan Thomas and owner Augustin Stables claimed this mare back for 50k after losing her for 25k back in the fall of 2024.  They’ve been rewarded with a G3 Wilshire win last March.  Like Innovative to her inside, that win was followed by a dismal effort and a layoff.  But unlike her rival, Tirupati has had a prep race back where she ran poorly in the Monrovia down the dip.  It looks like they gave her one, and she is ready to go.  Thomas has good states going sprint to route as well as 2nd race off a layoff.  A lot to like here.

3.  A Thousand Miles (15/1)  A front-running sort who takes them as far as she can.  She almost held on at 95-1 in the Autumn Miss last October before winning the Zia Park Oaks on dirt.  She gets “Big Money” Mike Smith in the boot, but may be a cut below these.

4.  Ripassare (10/1)   I don’t know what to make of Phil D’Amato’s second entry in here.  He is her third trainer in what will be her seventh start.  She looked to have promise early and hasn’t run poorly of late at Turfway.  Why only 6 starts as a 5-year-old?  Why all the barn changes?  I have more questions and not many answers, other than her Beyer speed numbers haven’t increased from her 3-year-old year to now.

5.  May Day Ready (9/2)  Speaking of barn changes, Dick Mandella takes over from Joseph Lee with this 4-year-old filly.  She was very competitive against some of the best turf fillies of her crop. Lee did a great job with her.  He won the G2 Lake Placid at Saratoga with her.  I’m willing to forgive the Valley View effort, as nothing went her way that day.  Mr. Mandella has trained a horse or two in his day, and if you subscribe to the idea that East Coast racing is a bit stronger these days, then you must like May Day Ready.  If she progresses at all, she will be tough.

6.  Rosie Jeeks (15/1)  A former Chad Brown protégé, Rosie Jeeks is now in the hands of Neil Drysdale.  It looks like she went through a sale last fall (sold for $300K) and has had 2 West Coast runs.  Her last was a neck loss down at Turf Paradise in a $30k stake.  That doesn’t class up to these, and I will take a wait-and-see position on her.

7.  Watchtower (6-1)  Her form may be a bit dirtied up.  She pulled up in her last race, and her last win was in October of 2024.  She owns a few minor placings since then but never loses by much.  Her Beyer numbers are in the mid-80s, which puts her in the mix.  I don’t think she’s kept better company than she faces today, so with that, another minor placing?

8.  Take a Breath (4/1)  She’s had some success going longer than today’s assignment recently.  She did win a few mile races across the pond before coming in a decent fourth in last year’s Del Mar Oaks (G1).  She may get a bit of a pace to run into, and if that is the case, the cutback may be in her favor.  Hot jockey and trainer combo.  A lot to like, and she is one of the ones.

9.  Grand Slam Smile (5-2)  Our morning line favorite.  What a fun mare!  She has never been out of the money in 19 tries!  Her stakes success has come in the Cal-Bred ranks.  It looks like she tries hard every time and will need a bit extra wading into Grade 3, open company.  There is nothing in her form that says she can’t run with these.  She is right there, if not better than most with Beyers.  I’m not sure I want to take a favorite from an outside post with speed going a mile on grass at Santa Anita.

SUMMARY

I find myself with a lot more questions than answers when looking at the race.  Layoffs.  Barn changes.  Cutbacks. Pace dynamics.  I feel like if they ran this race 10 times, you may find 4 or 5 different winners.  It will come down to the trip and how the race unfolds.

And when betting on horses, in this situation, one must demand a price.  If I had to just pick a winner, it would be May Day Ready.  She has the most upside, run against very solid competition and has done nothing wrong.  She won’t be anywhere close to her 9/2 morning line.  To bet on Take a Breath or Grand Slam Smile, I would need 6/1 or better, and I don’t think that’s happening either.

That leaves me with Tirupati.  I’m guessing she will be the fourth choice or so.  That should be higher than her 9/2 morning line and closer to 7/1 or 8/1.  She’s inside, second off a layoff, good trainer/jockey combo and hopefully a good price…here’s hoping.

THE BET:  (based on $100 wagered)

$100 win Tirupati.  Any other type of bet is even more guessing than this.

Handicapper's Corner: 2025 River City Stakes (G3)

Chasing the Crown Sets Sights on River City Glory

By: The Turk

Welcome Friends to the ThoroFan Blog, where I specialize in Turf Racing and Exacta Betting.

"Specialize" is not how I feel this week, as I had Ethical Diamond at something like 3% chance to win the Breeders' Cup Turf.

I'd love to tell you how I thought highly of him and he was my wise guy pick, yada, yada, yada, but no.

I don't think I would have picked that horse, considering the field he was in, to finish in my exacta unless I boxed the whole field.  Beware the handicapper and bet constructor who can't admit he was wrong.  I'm going to diagnose both my handicap, pre race analysis and the video in a longer post tomorrow, just because I like pain and I also like to try to learn.  The only sign was improving Timeforms, but in that field, at his post draw, I still don't see it.  Anyways, I'll stop grumbling.

Turf racing is over for the year.  Yes I know there are some races, but for all legitimate purposes, it's done.  When you like turf racing, and you like older horses, this time of the year is slow and slim pickings, but the good people at The Thorofan asked me (they didn't read my Breeders' Cup debacle....shhh, or they won't invite me again) handicap the River City at Churchill Downs, so that is the mission.

It's not a terrible field.  This time of year you get older horses possibly taking one last run before retirement or 4 YOs who are building on their improvements, with very little high end class, or graded stakes wins, to show for it.

Conversely, not a lot of video I think worth looking at for this race.  Interestingly, so much of this field is early speed, and not a lot of success in the field at the distance, with only five (5)  1 and  1/8 Mile wins combined.

Before I go to far, I'd be tone death to not mention that Louisville is having a terrible week following the airplane crash that left at least 13 dead, with 9 or more missing.  Say a prayer for the area as they continue to heal and bury the dead. Prayer, regardless of your beliefs, helps, and never lose sight of the fact that as humans, we are all interconnected.

The weather should be mostly dry after some rain on Friday.  Keep an eye on turf conditions, as this is the last race on the card tomorrow at almost 6 PM and two other races, non graded stakes, are on the card.  Today is listed as firm with rail at 36 feet, it's max position.

Let's Get After This:

Exacta History: Exacta In The Money (ITM) > 60% in BOLD

Visualization of Early and Late US Timeform Pace: Three true late speed, a few tactical, albeit slow mid runners and a bunch of very early speed.

I set Par for this race as 75 Early and 105 Late

Tomlinson Number Analysis with Focus on Distance

8 Nov 2025 CD; The River City Handicap G3;  1 1/8 Miles on Turf

So, What to do with all that?  If I'm being honest, I think I'm burned out on handicapping this year because I'm without a very strong opinion. Everyone can sometimes use a break, and post Breeders' Cup I generally shut it down.  It doesn't help I uked all over myself in my annual Super Bowl, The Breeders' Cup Turf (can you tell I'm gripping?).

I'm going to value the late speed of Chasing the Crown/6:  Loves Churchill, 6 for 6 in the exacta.  Has a win 1/2 furlong shorter so I'm not holding the distance against him but its a wildcard he has to overcome.  Not the best horse in the field, not the best trainer/jock combo, but I like all of it added together. My chalk.

I like Taking Candy/12 more than others, and I have the 5 YO son of Twirling Candy for Lael Stables as a win contender I like his early tactical speed and decent late turn of foot.  Place in G2 two back and a G3 win four back.

I have a crowded group just below these two that I think are all legitimate exacta contenders.

Corruption/8 is an improving 4 YO who has just been building all 2025 after entering the year as a maiden.  Acquitted himself well in 4th in The Manhattan in the deep G1 waters, same in the Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs.

Lagynos/9 doesn't win much, 3 wins in last 18 but 9 Place and Show in that time frame.  $1.7 MM lifetime winner, won the $500K Tapit at Kentucky Downs by 5 lengths and ran back in Place 9 days later in a grade 3.  Off since September 6, a break Asmussen wins 16% of the time on 485 tries.  Dettori is up, winless in 5 CD starts over past year.

Epic Ride/2 is a $1.9 MM career winner  at 4 YO and a 2024 Kentucky Derby entrant before going to turf in June of 2025.  1 turf win in 4 tries and today the longest stretch out beyond 8 furlongs since the Kentucky Derby.  Big early speed.  Quality horse, no doubt.  More questions for me than answers.

Encino/4 is a Brad Cox, gaudy stats Brad, (24% Graded Stakes Winner, 22% Turf, 27% Synth to Turf, 28% Routes, 26% winner at CD with I. Ortiz, Up)with another improving 4 YO making only his 3rd turf start.  First time at CD, First time at distance on turf, very classy son of Nyquist for Godolphin.  More questions than answers as well.

Mercante/7 had a very good start to season in 2025, winning 3 of first 5  races before going backward a bit.  Oddly placed as 60-1 shot at Keeneland  in Turf Mile last month, cutting back 4 furlongs  from Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs. Has a Place Finish/101 Beyer at this track and distance in May in a Grade 1  and followed that up with a G3 with 1/2 furlong shorter at CD.  Not sure what to make of him.

If I boxed 6-12-8-9-4-2 (Skipping Mercante) for $2, that's a $60 bet.  Too pricy and lousy risk/reward.  This improves somewhat dropping the 4-2 from Win Position, a $2 bet for $24.  That's my base bet.

If you are playing after the Breeders' Cup, I tip my hat to you, a real horseplayer.

Have fun friends, Turk Out!

Handicapper's Corner: 2025 Arlington Million (G1)

Will it be a Mystikal Million?

By: Stuart Marc deVoe, ThoroFan Hadicapper

I’ve always loved the Arlington Million. The history. The prestige. Everything about it. I’ve learned to continue my affection now that it’s at Colonial (R.I.P. Arlington). The sweeping turf course, like Arlington, gives everyone a chance.

Unfortunately, this year’s addition is a bit watered down with Saratoga running the Sword Dancer on the same day. But that doesn’t mean we can’t dope out a bet or two.

The Grade 1 is featured as race 11 of 12 with a 5:54 PM ET post.

Let’s look at the field:

1.  Mystic Dan (9/2) – Things seemed to go south on the 2024 Derby winner for a few starts. Kenny seems to have him going good again. His Stephen Foster effort is better than it looks on paper. Mindframe stalked a slowish pace and held sway against Whitney winner Sierra Leone and Dan was only 2.5 lengths away. His turf work looked just fine, and I would expect him to transfer his form to the grass. WIN CONTENDER

2.  Time Song (30/1)  This speedy son of Not This Time has one win in 12 tries. Perhaps he can wire them, but it won’t be with any of my support. TOSS

3.  Vesting (12/1)  Mike Maker sends out another entrant that seems to like it up on the engine. He doesn’t seem like he needs the lead, however and could work out a stalking trip. He’s cutting back in distance but has only cleared his Allowance other than condition.    This is a G1, folks. TOSS

4.  Runaway Storm(20/1)  With only 8 starts on his card, Runaway Storm has a G3 win to his credit…2 years ago. This seems like a tall order, but this is the first time since that win that he has put three efforts in a row together. Perhaps he can get a slice. LONGSHOT CHANCE

5.  Cairo (IRE) (7/2)  Fresh off a placing in the Group 1 Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, Cairo (Ire) comes in with some solid credentials. His company lines alone make him fancied, but seems challenged in the win department. He is 0 for 12 over the last 2 years in top Euro company. I’m also suspicious of his forward style in a race with other speed types here Stateside.   TOSS

6.  Fort Washington (4/1)  He always puts forth a good effort to be there or thereabouts lately. He is a solid G2 or G3 runner. In this field, that makes him one of the most accomplished. I like his closing style in today’s speed laden event. On the downside, his last race seemed a bit flat as he was on his wrong lead finishing. He may relish today’s distance. WIN CONTENDER

7.  Grand Sonata (8-1)  Cuts back after a nice run at Monmouth in the United Nations, where he was second to a Chad runner. Grand Sonata has quietly amassed a $2.2 million bankroll and is another runner who seems to always show up and grab a slice. Not sure he can win here, but he will round out some exotics. BOARD RUNNER

8.  Integration (8/5)  Our morning line favorite is deserving of that role. Integration has been on a steady diet of G1 events running with the likes of Deterministic, Carl Spakler and Spirit of St. Louis. He has 3 wins and a 2nd in four tries at Colonial, including a run in this race last year where he lost to Nation’s Pride – the Sword Dancer favorite. WIN CONTENDER

SUMMARY

The first question one must ask here is, can Mystik Dan transfer his form to the turf? If you answer that as a yes, he’s a major player. He will most likely be over bet based on familiarity.

The second question here is how much credit does one give to Cairo (Ire) coming in on top European form? For me, I respect his company, but I just don’t like forward running Euros in speed type U.S. races. He will take money, and I am looking elsewhere.

Finally, this race sets up for both Fort Washington and Integration, with the latter garnering more support at the windows.

THE BET:  (based on $100 wagered)

$30 exacta box – Mystik Dan & Fort Washington

$20 exacta Fort Washington with Mystik Dan & Integration

Good Luck!
