Handicapper's Corner: Triple Bend Stakes (G1)

Seven Sprinters Line Up in Triple Bend Stakes

By Robert Marks, They're in the Gate (and on Twitter @theyreinthegate)

On Saturday, March 11, 2017 Santa Anita will be host the Grade One Triple Bend Stakes  for 3 year olds and upward. The purse is $400,000 and it on the dirt going 7 furlongs.
Here are the participants listed by Post Positions, Horse, Jockey and odds:
1. Denman's Call, Tyler Baze, 15-1
2. Point Piper, Mario Gutierrez, 10-1
3. Kobe's Back, Javier Castellano, 5-2
4. Silent Bird, Flavien Prat, 4-1
5. Masochistic, Mike Smith,1-1
6. Nowalking, Edwin Maldonado, 15-1
7. Conquest Cobra, Rafael Bejarano, 10-1

Masochistic- This 7 year old speedball returns to the track after not racing since November where he finished 2nd  to Defrong in the Breeders’ Cup Spring. Although he was disqualified for a medication violation. Since then he has looked super in workouts. He has experience at Santa Anita and has won this race before in 2015 with a Beyer speed figure of 109. The only problem is the short odds of 1-1

Kobe’s Back - this 5-year-old horse comes off even a bigger layoff than Masochistic, last running in last year’s addition of the Triple Bend run in June of 2016. One thing to note is the Jockey-Javier Castellano will head west to sub for regular jockey Gary Stevens (recovering from an injury). This horse love to earn dollars and has finished in the money 9 times in 20 starts. He is a mid-pack to closing type horse who can pick up the pieces late.

Denman’s Call - The youngster in the field at 4 years old, we look for Denman’s Call to get in the mix to juice up our trifecta bet. Lightly raced -only 7 starts with 5 times in the money including 2 first place finishes. Certainty not the fastest horse in the punch and stepping up in class after 2 recent allowance races, but had a bullet workout this week and can easily clunk up for 3rd in the late going.

We never like to bet 1-1 favorites like Masochistic so instead we will play around with exotics. We will hope that our 15-1 shot Denman’s Call adds to his one maiden win with a Grade 1 Surprise (or at least a place or show).

Wagering/Betting Handigambling Bankroll: Her is our $80 worth of betting for the race

Exacta Box: $5 Exacta ($20)
1,3,5
Trifecta ($10 Box for $60 Total)
1,3,5

As always, watch the Board and if at the track watch how the horses look in the Paddock and adjust your bets accordingly. Good Luck!
