Handicapper's Corner: 2016 Kentucky Derby

Eight ThoroFan Handicappers Take on the 2016 Kentucky Derby

The collective minds of the ThoroFan Handicappers give their 2016 Kentucky Derby picks for first through fourth place, plus their best longshot bomb. The handicapper’s decisions are widely varied, reflecting the tenor of this year’s Derby.  There is a consensus that the unbeaten favorite Nyquist will end his perfect streak and place second or third. Surprisingly, only one handicapper picked Nyquist on top.  ThoroFan S. Florida Chapter Member John Caro added his thoughts about the Derby below the chart.  Good Luck to everyone and Happy Derby Day!

ThoroFan S. Florida Chapter Member John Caro's Kentucky Derby thoughts:

1. Mohaymen - traveled 110+ more distance than everyone else in the FL Derby. I'll scratch that race. Works have been very good at Churchill. Speed in the Remsen was 55 FPS and more representative of his ability finishing the last 1/8 in 12.1 seconds.

2. Nyquist.- Who doesn't like a champion and a regular winner. Like the connections but wonder if the shorter time between races will impact his derby day? Also his best front-running style garnered a best last 1/8 at 12.8 seconds and Majesto stayed on the pace 2-2.5 back.

3. Exaggerator has the speed to make it a contest and his mid speed may surprise. And a very winning jockey in triple crown races.

4. Tie.... Creator and Brody's Cause..... both are tough! Like their style! Brody was 3rd behind Nyquist in the BC, has won at Churchill. Creator is coming into himself and his jockey can measure the pace and has been riding at Churchill with good wins. His energy distribution may be the best of the group.

Longshot - don't shoot me...... don't know the jockey but when I watched the video of Lani at Meydan..... fell out of the gate..... spotted everybody 8 lengths and closed up on the back stretch then relaxed down the final as second by 2-3 to close in the last 100 yards strong. Smart jockey who knows his horse? I know history says NO but I liked his run and if he does the same here it may be a real treat. I won't leave Majesto off my ticket after watching him keep up in the  FL Derby.
